I saw the new Holidays on Ice about two months ago…I WAS PISSED! ANDWTFTHECOVERISSOUGLY!
Since I had been fans of all parties for years, when David Sedaris was on The Daily Show it made me so very happy inside. In fact, David Sedaris is coming to the venue that I actually saw Jon Stewart at. Thinking about that event, btw, keeps me going. :P
While I love Chuck Palahinuk (especially when he engraves books to be and puts sparkly drawings in them), it is definitely his shock value that increases his popularity so dramatically every day…David Sedarith is just plain witty and so very amusing because I can relate to pretty much every single story he has ever written. Even the one about Mike Tyson. (or not, haha).
I think with me, I used to watch Strangers With Candy way before my Colbert loving days on The Daily Show/Colbert Report, so I think of it all seperately. She is such a genius though…she helps me get through some of my general depression(s), and her book made me feel so much better after my grandmother died (which I bought the same day she died before I knew…a few years ago…on Halloween…)
Anyway, the point is that I want to be a Sedaris.
Damn, but your chances aren’t too bad. It’ll be awhile before he decides to drag his ass down here…at least I’ve got that Live @ Carnegie Hall cd I guess… It’s odd that he’s relatively on the cult-status, since he’s been honoured by TIME magazine and all that. I guess humour writers aren’t as acknowledged as Chuck Palahniuk or whatever.
Amy is awesome and I discovered her through Colbert, and David was on The Daily Show like…once. Haha, bad linking, but it’s there. Although when I first discovered Sedaris (I don’t remember how, I just found Dress Your Family… in a second hand bookstore and the name sounded familiar) I didn’t figure out that he and Amy were related until some convenient googling.
Poo story was pure genius. I also loved his lisp story. ‘David Thedarith’ made my night when I read that.
Btw, I was in Borders today. Apparently they released a new edition of Holidays on Ice. It was hardcover and pretty with a new festive cover and had an extra story apparently, but costs about 35 dollars. That sortof made me mad.
I agree!
I suppose the cult is fairly larger here in the states…just not in my parts! He is coming to Atlanta, and for the past few months I have been stalking ticketmaster to see if they are on sale yet/if there is a date for them to go on sale…but so far no such luck!
I love Amy Sedaris, ‘tis why I checked out David. I love Stewart/Colbert as well, but I never really thought about them linking me to him…I suppose Colbert is in the mix somehow, being on Strangers With Candy and all, but I blame Amy. She is dear to me as well.
THE POO STORY IS ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITES! I cried and couldn’t stop laughing for about 15 minutes after I read that one. SO AMAZING. I also love the one where he is on drugs and doing all of the “artsy” stuff.
Naked is definitely my favorite as a collective, though. I think…Dress Your Family In Corduroy And Denim may be a little higher. Regardless, they are all great and no real reason to rank anything like I try to do and fail miserably at all of the time!
That’s awesome. It’s hard to pick a favourite with David Sedaris. I guess it’s easier to figure out which articles I enjoy the most from each book or something (Speaking of, the one where he had to face the really hard poo in Me Talk Pretty… is a classic). I don’t know many people who know of him either (and most who do, like myself, would have discovered him through the Stephen Colbert/ Jon Stewart connection
or mayhaps been forced to read his work by yours truly), but at the same time it’s pretty cool too be part of the tight little cult who managed to stumble across the brilliance. It’s like discovering something fantastic before it became the new ‘it’ thing among the masses.Completely the truth! Nobody I know has read any of his work (figures), so I told one of my super-awesome-intelligent friends to read Me Talk Pretty One Day (not my favorite, but hey it’s a start) and he was so indifferent to it. He is one of those people that if someone says he is anything less than perfect then I take it personally! Haha.
I love David Sedaris. So hilarious, observant and wonderfully human. One of my all-time favourite authors.
This man gets me through life most of the time…wonderful.
